Improvisation is the ability to understand harmony, melody, and phrasing from the inside, and to make music with them in the moment. It is spontaneous composition.

I studied classical guitar performance at DePaul University and at Northwestern University's Bienen School of Music. Much of my musical life has been spent inside the older traditions this course draws from, the lute, the theorbo, the Baroque guitar, the early music world where improvisation was never a novelty. It was simply part of being a musician.

I have performed with the Chicago Philharmonic, Music of the Baroque, the Newberry Consort, and Haymarket Opera, and my playing has been heard on WFMT, Chicago's classical radio station.

I share that not to impress you, but to make one thing clear. I am not teaching improvisation as something outside the classical tradition. I am teaching it as something that has always belonged to it, and that will help you understand the music you already love with more depth and more freedom.
